“The Bachelor degree in English Language and Literature offered by the Faculty of Language Studies is designed to give students a focused, relevant and utilizable body of knowledge in language, literature and linguistics related topics. The program introduces students to core linguistics and literary concepts; such as second and foreign language acquisition, English language teaching, discourse analysis, Shakespeare and the English canon.
The programme equips students with knowledge about the development and spread of the English language, literary texts in their wider intellectual and historical contexts, the critical processes used to analyse literary genres and technique, in addition to a myriad of socio-cultural and philosophical theories associated with studying English language and literature".
The knowledge and skills offered by the program provide student with vital assets to enable future employability and career success.
Career Opportunities
English language and literature graduates have a broad range of job opportunities at the academic and service sector levels in private and public organizations covering functions such as teaching, journalism, media, travel, and every job that requires good communication in English. The education sector including schools, universities and teaching centers is a major destination for graduates of this track, in addition to ,the service sector including tourism, banks, industry, press agencies, publishing houses, advertising.
After all, graduates in English Language and Literature master a good level of English language, both oral and written.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted in any Bachelor's Programme, the student should fulfil the following conditions:
1. Obtain a general secondary school certificate or equivalent, which must be approved by the Ministry of Education in Egypt.
2. Students should be fluent in the English Language and should show evidence by providing the results of internationally accredited tests of English Language, if available. The minimum required scores are as follows:
a) TOFEL: Paper based 500
b) IELTS: 5
Duration
- The duration of the BA programme is 129 to133 credit hours.
- Upon the completion of all the programme requirements (129 to 133 credit hours), students are awarded a BA Honors in English Language & Literature - a dual degree: A Certificate from the AOU approved by the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt & a Certificate from the Open University - United Kingdom.

The main features of the programme are as follows:
The programme aims to provide students with high quality instructions training in English Lang & Lit.
This programme aims to:
- Offer a programme of blended learning that addresses the academic and vocational needs of students in language communication and literary appreciation.
- Develop creative and critical thinking in students as well as appropriate communication skills in writing and speaking
- Prepare students for further and more advanced study.
- Prepare and qualify students for employment.
- Develop in the students a range of specific and transferable skills including literacy and communication skills.
- Relate and integrate both language and literature material they studied across the range of genres, time, and place.
- Provide a critical evaluation of both language and literature texts.
On successful completion of the programme students will be able to:
- Communicate in English with ease and confidence on everyday matters, as well as on matters relating to their university education.
- Read, understand, discuss, and evaluate literary works comprising essays, poems, novels, and plays.
- Express themselves orally and in writing on issues pertaining to different modes of language use and literary analysis.
- Read extended language and literature material, distinguish facts from opinions, and both analyze and evaluate different genres of literary works.
- Show a sound understanding of the structure of language, language variation, and language use.
- Show a solid knowledge of and familiarity with English prose, poetry, fiction, and drama and some knowledge of prominent non-western texts in literature and the arts.
AOU follows the credit hour system.
Tuition fees are calculated based on the total number of credit hours for which you are registered, in addition to the cost of the educational books.
Cost per Credit Hour is 1120 LE.
